Small Arms List
This article features a wide variety of weapons that may be used to equip marines on board an Aerial vessel. Some are designed for use at long range for firing from one ship to another, while others are much more useful in boarding actions.
While Naval vessels typically will have standard issue weapons of their marines, operators of privatley owned-ships can issue other non-standard weapons to their marines. The cost for such weapons tends to not be especially high, so sometimes doing so is worthwhile.
Some of these weapons take skill to use and may only be used by marines at the crack level:
- The Asiatic / Hjarnaal bow is a compound reflex bow of the type used by the ancient Mongols and Turks. Earthly examples do exist, but they are quite rare. Certain tribes of Hill Martians manufacture the Hjarnaal bow, a Martian equivalent, but they are hardly in mass production.
- The Arbalest is an especially heavy crossbow with a steel span, and while they are from Earth they are hardly common. The large size of the Arbalest makes strength an important issue when using them.
- The Long Hunting Rifle is a weapon designed for sharpshooters, and ordinary marines do not possess the skill level to gain the advantage that such weapons can offer to the expert.
- The Elephant Gun is a large bore weapon that requires substantial strength to use.
A group of given marines can only be armed with a single longarm each; they will not be able to carry several different rifles for different occaisions. While it is possible that marines will carry different weapons from one another, this is not recommended since it can create a bookkeeping nightmare.
It is unusual that marines will be armed with pistols, but stats are provided for those as well. Note however that these ratings apply to marines only and not to other officers engaging in boarding actions. Only crew who can engage in independent small arms fire gain any advantage for being armed with weapons listed here.
