Updated Gun List
Optional rules for Sky Galleons of Mars
Here is a compilation of Sky Galleons of Mars weapon lists from a number of sources, intended to be as complete as possible. In addition, a number of new weapons are included here, and some modifications to the weapons have been made in these tables for the purpose of play balance.
Changes
A few noteworthy changes have been made to these lists for the sake of play balance. Perhaps the most important ones have to do with the damage levels of guns.
Damage Values
It never really seemed right to me that a 24-pounder gun would do only twice the damage of a 1-pounder gun. As it stands, the most effective design method is to pile machine cannon upon machine cannon on your ship; they have a very high ratio of damage to weight. Likewise, the 6" Long gun is radically more effective than other rifled guns, in terms of damage to weight ratio; even the 4.7"QF has the same ratio, though it is supposedly more modern than the 6" Long, and it also has less range and penetration.
Originally I had thought to lower the damage value of the 6", but that would not have addressed the dameage discrepancy between machine cannons and regular cannons. So, instead, I raised the damage value for all rifled guns between a 12-pounder (3") and the 5" Long by one point. This gives the Aphid's 4"S gun a little punch, and makes even the 3" gun seem attractive. Machine cannons are still the most effective damage dealers against unarmored targets, but their advantage is drastically reduced.
Weight Changes
Also, considering the weight restrictions of using large-bore weapons, a weapon that weighs twice as much as another weapon ought to be about twice as effective. However, the value of a large-bore weapon (i.e. above 6") drops off radically instead of improving. Why? For example, under the original rules, an 8" gun weighed 300 tons, had a ROF of (1), and a damage rating of 8. In other words, firing every other round, the average damage per round dealt by an 8" gun is four. Meanwhile, since a 6" gun weighs only 100 tons, three of these weapons could be installed in place of a single eight inch gun. And since the damage value of a 6" gun is 6, and they fire every round, the average damage per round of these weapons put togeter is 18, over four times the value of the single 8" gun. Which would you choose for your ship?
Therefore, I have decreased the weight of all of those rifled guns larger than 6", on the grounds that they are far too weak otherwise. The other options would have been to increase the Damage Values, or to increase the ROF.
Range
Under the original rules, the Martian Light gun provides about a quarter the value of a Heavy Gun per ton. Though it weighs half as much, it does half the damage, has half the range, and half the penetration of a Heavy gun. The Light is such a weak weapon that it is hard to imagine Martian ship designers considering it useful at all.
Nevertheless it makes good sense to have a weapon that is smaller that the gun that is referred to as "Heavy". In order to make the Light more attractive, I have extended the range of the Light gun to 2/3, which makes it's performance the same as a 9-pounder smoothbore gun. I then rearranged the weights of Earth smoothbore guns so that they matched their Martian counterparts.
Rate of Fire
The Rate of Fire for Gatling weapons has been adjusted downward, to reflect the fact that even though they are an older and less reliable technology than the Navy-standard Nordenfelt, their value under the original rules was greater than that of the Nordenfelt. If a ship carries three Nordenfelts, try carrying five .50 calibre Gatlings instead. The total weight and base rate of fire is the same, with the added advantage of the higher rate of fire for really intense moments. Also, this gives you five crewmen instead of three.
Thus the .50 calibre Gatling's ROF has been reduced to 2/4, to reflect this fact. Likewise, the 1" Gatling's ROF has also been reduced to 2/4, as the heavier version is hardly likely to fire faster than the lighter version.
Likewise the Maxim gun has been given a low/high ROF, to balance the value of it somewhat. While the Maxim was less prone to jamming that most crank-powered machineguns, nevertheless jams did happen. However, to reflect this, at the high rate of fire the Maxim needs to roll two 1's on the dice to cause a jam, rather than the normal single 1 roll.
Penetration
Rather than have two listings for Penetration (one for short range and one for long), the original game had just one rating. Instead of having two separate ratings, it is much simpler to double the armour rating of a target for all weapons fired at long range. Remember that for the purposes of armour, a rating of zero is considered to be half of a rating of one, and double the armor rating of a vessel with a rating of zero produces a result of one.
Key
- Notation: The symbols used to denote the weapon on a Ship Form.
- Weight: The weight of the weapon in Tons, as installed on a Ship.
- Pen: The Penetration rating of the weapon. This can come in several categories:
- n: A number represents that Penetration Rating
- V: Represents a Penetration Rating equal to the velocity (speed) of the vessel doing the damage.
- A: Represents a Penetration rating equal to the altitude difference between attacking vessel and target vessel, for use with deadfall ordnance.
- R: Represents a Penetration Rating equal to device reliability (for Invented devices)
- DV: The Damage Value of the weapon. This can come in several categories:
- n: A number represents that many damage points
- nD6: A number of damage points equal to a six-sided die times n
- P: Personnel damage
- F: Fire damage
- W: Water / Fire retardant damage
- T: Loss of Trim
- R: Represents a Damage Value equal to device reliability (for Invented devices)
- Reload: The Reload rating is used in the alternate Phased Combat Rules. Ignore this rating if those rules are not used.
- ROF: The Rate-of-Fire rating from the original game - do not use if the optional rules for Phased Combat are used.
- Burst: The Burst rating is equal to the Rate-of-Fire rating from the original game if the gun in question is a machine cannon or machinegun. It represents the fact that several shots are fired from the gun virtually simultaneously, until the magazine is empty. Guns that do not have a built-in magazine do not have a burst rating.
- Trv: Traverse rating is used in the optional rule: Agility and Traverse. Ignore this rating if Traverse is not used.
- Crew: The number of crew required to operate the weapon. If the number is in bracket, this means that the weapon does not come with space for those crewmembers, and deck crew must be assigned to operate the weapon.
- Range: The maximum distance in cables/hexes for short range and long range (indirect fire weapons use only long range)
- (E): Extreme range; use only with the Extreme Range optional rule
- Cost: The cost of the weapon in pounds sterling.
- Cost (E): The cost of the weapon when purchased from a human-run shipyard
- Cost (M): The cost of the weapon when purchased at a Martian shipyard.
- Power: the level of electrical power required to power the device.
